Dear Reader,

While attending Florida Gulf Coast University, I have completed the course ENC 3250 Professional Writing.  This course has taught me many different ways to expand my knowledge and understand the importance of writing.  Professional Writing has given me several key factors that will ultimately lead to success in the business world.  Each week consisted of a different challenge that pushed me to develop my writing skills to the next level.  I had to create a variety of business letters, memos, emails, and even my own website.  The assignments encouraged me to realize how important writing and particular writing is concerning my career and future education.

The text book, Technical Communication, was written in a simple form which made was clearly straightforward and to the point.  Every chapter gave great examples of the type of writing that was being discussed throughout the section.  These examples helped me because it was clear and concise on how proper writing needed to be formatted.  The format of business writing was the number one lesson that I believe helped me the most.  Business writing consists of multiple types of communication, and before this course, it was difficult for me to understand which format to use.  In addition to formatting, this course has taught me almost every detail about writing which will assist me in every aspect of life.

Writing is an important factor for all parts of life, especially in the business market. Personally, this course has increased my knowledge which has improved my writing skills in my workplace.  I am the office manager for a wine distributing company, and I am in contact with accounts and sales representatives on a daily basis.  The most common communicator for this business is email.  ENC 3250 has enlightened me that emails do not just have one form or particular goal.  Each email sent has its own idea and specific way to be written.  I noticed my tone and structure of each email which led me back to the original email in order to edit what was written incorrectly.

Throughout the course the professor’s main focus was on what she called the 5 C’s of writing: clear, concise, complete, correct, and courteous.  These 5 key points of writing have truly improved my skills when I communicate with other involved in the business I work for.  The material covered in this course is extremely important because each individual will have to participate in act of writing no matter what career they choose. Writing is significant because the way you write and communicate to others show your ability to be profession and the education you have received.

When applying for a job, the first thing the employer will notice is poor writing skills and lack of proper grammar.  Another type of writing I learned during this course was how to create a resume.  I had a resume that I created previous to the course, but ENC 3250 gave me specific details on how to format and create a proper resume.  Resumes are important because in order to apply for different job opportunities it is mandatory to show a resume.  This will give the employer a list of skills and your experience in previous jobs.  A poorly written resume may cause someone to lose the chance to be accepted into the open position in a business.  As a college student, my resume will include my work experience, my skills and strengths, and my education accomplishments.  It is important to remember all these details when I ready to submit my resume to different businesses after I earn my degree.

I want to be positive that after the semester ends I can continue to practice what I have learned and apply it in the real world.  Everyday people are communicating, creating, and thinking of new ways to increase their business and success.  ENC 3250 has showed me the importance of individual and collaborative work.  Each week the students were required to post on the Anything Else Café. This discussion forum gave us the opportunity to see what we all were thinking and dealing with on a daily basis.  It was a positive influence to understand how communication can lead to helping others where support was needed.  Working and communicating as a student body gave each one of us the chance to help one another and share our ideas to expand our knowledge on certain topics.

Throughout the course, each student had to grade and review three assignments from another student.  I found this very helpful because the comments made on my assignments open my eyes to a different perspective.  In a business setting, it is important to seek the ideas and perspectives of others.  The more knowledge and ideas that people share with ultimately lead to problem solving.  In order to continue my education, I have to make goals for which I can strive to achieve.   For example, every day at work I read my emails and make sure that my responses are clear and concise for the reader.  I check my subject line to make sure it is short and sweet, but to the point. Before this course, I would barely pay attention to my emails because I did not believe that the form and grammar was as important as a business letter or memo.  With the technology today, almost all businesses are using computer systems and cell phones for all communication, so it is vital to learn the proper use of writing emails.

By taking this course I have improved my skills to help with future experiences and career.  I will continue to practice writing in a professional manner in order to progress my skills.  I recommend this course to any and all students, no matter what their major might be.  This course is helpful to every area of education, and will be useful in any work field.  I have learned a great deal, and will continue to make myself aware of the differences in my writing which will lead to better experience, better career, and ultimately success in life.

Sincerely,

Carmella Westran
